Kalaja e Novobërdës · The Silver City
Once the most important medieval mining town in the Balkans, Novo Brdo was famed for its silver and gold deposits. At its peak in the 14th century, the city had a population of over 15,000 and its coins circulated across Europe. The fortress sits atop a volcanic hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside .
The city was the seat of the Serbian Empire's mint and later fell to the Ottomans in 1455 after a famous siege. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved walls, towers, and the remains of the St. Nicholas Church, while imagining the bustling medieval city that once stood here .
